Seems like a science experiment, but worth a try:

1/8 tsp. brewers or champagne yeast, measured precisely
½ c. warm (not hot) water
2 ¼ c. sugar (or 5 tbsp. sugar and 2 c. sugar substitute)
1 tbsp. + 1 tsp. soda extract, in a flavor of your choice

1 gallon plastic or glass container with lid
2 2-liter plastic soda bottles with lids

Dissolve yeast in warm water; let soak for 5 minutes.  Pour sugar, soda extract, and dissolved yeast into the gallon container.  Add enough additional water to fill; cover and shake thoroughly until sugar is completely dissolved.  Pour the mixture into the soda bottles; screw on the caps tightly. 

Store the bottles in a dark place, or covered with a cloth, at room temperature for 4-6 days.  Squeeze each bottle daily; if one feels too firm, open the cap to let out a little carbonation, then re-seal.  Refrigerate the bottles when they feel as firm as store-bought 2-liter bottles of soda; drink within 4 weeks.
